A few links and articles that I've enjoyed reading over the past couple of days:
BusinessWeek - Dell's Executive Search
BusinessWeek - Bubble 2.0
Rollingstone - Baby Billionaires of Silicon Valley
Fortune - Yahoo's Dilemma (Deal or No Deal)
News: Some new things are in-store for DarrenHerman.com. I've had numerous feedback (and I feel the same way) that the three column approach to the design of this site is limiting as the content column is too narrow. As early as next week (but probably within the next 2 weeks) there will be a whole new template and will potentially be moving services. Thanks for your reader input!
Justin Townsend, CEO of IGA Worldwide gave a fantastic speech at the BMO Capital Markets conference yesterday here in NYC. A link to the audio page of the speakers can be found here. Justin spoke in between Reginald Fils-Aime, President, Nintendo of America Inc. and Peter Moore, Microsoft, Corporate VP, IE Business, Entertainment & Devices Division.

Have you ever wanted something really badly that even if it didn't happen to you, you'd still be happy if someone else got it and you knew it was in good hands? I'm currently at odds - I've had a business idea for quite some time now and I feel that the market is exceptionally ripe right now. For various reasons including my involvement in leading in-game advertising company IGA Worldwide, Inc., I cannot pursue this opportunity but I also do not want to see it sit.
With that said, I've gone ahead and put my thoughts down on paper professionally (scope doc and business opportunity) and built the first iteration of the scaleable technological infrastructure in .NET and Ajax (+SQL 2005). In a nutshell, the idea is a niche social network for families with the ability for media sharing and tagging. Think genealogy 2.0 and digital family archiving. The deeper you dig into this opportunity, the more you'll believe in its market. I do not have to convince you, read the press on it.
Instead of shelving the idea for the future, I've gone ahead and listed it on eBay so a serious entrepreneur can come in and run with the idea. The marketplace is extremely hot for this type of idea and major media companies such as Yahoo, Viacom, Newscorp, IAC, Google, MyFamilyInc., and others are perfect strategic allies for this. I am very passionate about this opportunity and will make myself available as much as possible to see it succeed.

I've been gone for the past 10 days traveling to Saint Maarten and Anguilla so my posting has been minimal. For the first time in over 10 years, I traveled without a cellphone, Blackberry, computer, and didn't even check email thru a computer terminal on the trip. I did not think I could actually keep away from technology but I pulled it off, amazingly. My Internet addiction was strong at first, but after a few days, it wore off and I was fully able to enjoy the endless beaches and clear water.
On any beach vacation, you tend to have a lot of downtime. Whilst sitting at various beaches and our villa, I was able to ponder many different areas of business and technology including and not limited to entertainment (music, movies, games), in-game advertising, marketing and strategy. Over the next few weeks, I'll reflect about them accordingly...
Regarding our trip specifically, there are a few things that stood out. For starters, we were supposed to leave on an 8AM flight on last Friday morning out of JFK (on American Airlines). At 1:45am, American Airlines called us to tell us that our flight had been canceled. Nothing like waiting till the last minute! What if we hadn't kept out phone on over night? What if we didn't hear it ring? We would have showed up at the airport at 6am ready to go – but without a flight! There has got to be a business process here that will make this better for the customer. I'm sure many people had problems with this. Luckily for me, we were able to switch the flight and get on one at 6am... thus, leaving for the airport at 3:45am. EARLY.
I rented an “SUV” from Thrifty Car Rental over Orbitz.com a few weeks before the trip. I didn't know exactly what model of car I was going to get, but as a car snob, it actually made a difference. Here in New York, I drive a BMW Z4 3.0i and the fleet of Gotham Dream Cars but when we arrived in Saint Maarten, we were given a Hyundai Tuscon. I was extremely skeptical at first, but overall, I was very impressed. The driving conditions in Saint Maarten are anything but stellar and this smallish SUV handled them well including the steep hills and the dirt paths. Hyundai scored some points in my books.
If there is available land in Saint Maarten, chances are that a large hotel chain such as Westin is moving in and building a large hotel and casino. I visited Saint Maarten about 3 years ago and since then, there has been a lot of change. All of this building is fantastic for the economy but can the island handle the increased tourist capacity. With only 1 perimeter road around St. Maarten and bare inner roads, I'm not sure how the infrastructure of the island will take to all the additional traffic. While driving from Dawn Beach to Philipsburgh (capital) during semi-rush hour, it took 50 minutes... which should take 20 minutes. The roads are 2 lanes (1 on each side of the line)... talk about traffic.
The restaurants on the Island were surprisingly good. I'd recommend going to Spiga, La Gondola, Rare, or Tempation (in no particular order). There are tons of “street meat” vendors and I'm sure they are very good – but I wasn't allowed to taste the food for fear of getting sick....
Lastly, rain. If it rains in St. Maarten, don't fret. Chances are, it's not raining more than 500 feet away from you and it'll last for 20 minutes or less. There were many times that we were hanging out and a small front would move in, and would be gone within a few minutes.
I want to thank Sonja at Remax Luxury Real Estate for recommending the fantastic villa that we rented. The villa is located in Dawn Beach Estates overlooking the ocean and St. Barths. If you're traveling to St. Maarten, certainly give Sonja a ring!

I'm heading out to San Francisco today thru the weekend on a mini biz trip. I was a little hesitant on flying - not because of the safety, but because of the long lines in the airport. I have to say that I got to the gate in record timing this morning. Left my apartment at 6:05am and was in line at Cibo Express in the Jet Blue terminal by 6:55am.
Tips for traveling so far: Do not take an airline that you cannot print your boarding pass ahead of time. This saved me at least one and a half hours. The line was ridiculous for the ticket counters. Another tip is to not check your luggage. While packing last night, I realized that I didn't need my toiletries because they would be a hassle to get thru security with the new laws. I left them behind at the apartment and it allowd me to save at least an hour as I would have had to checked them.
If you are flying and have a printed out boarding pass and only carry-on luggage, don't get discouraged when you get to the airport and see huge lines - at least I felt that way! My stomach almost dropped. You can go right around generally and bypass the crowd.
Speak to you from San Francisco...

Growing up, most of my closest friends went to the likes of Cornell, John Hopkins, Duke and the like, but my alma-matter wasn't usually on their list... until now. Skidmore College has made the top 25 "new elite ivies" according to MSNBC. Congratulations!

As most of you know, I just moved apartments from Murray Hill to the UES. I happened to have picked the two worst days to move due to the extreme weather conditions. Oh well, life goes on.
I spoke with Time Warner Cable about a week before I moved into the apartment and I booked a time that they could come in and install my cable and Internet service. I "worked" from home today and waited for the Time Warner installation person to come... was supposed to be at the apartment between 10am-2pm. At 2:30pm, I was still waiting. Come 3:15, the gentlemen arrives like nothing happened and begins the install. Within 30 minutes, he had finished everything and we tested the TV - fine. We then tested the Internet - worked, but very slowly. He said it was my Netgear router and he left....
Fast forward to 5pm - I've been on the phone with Netgear trying to get things working and we adequately troubleshoot everything for about 45 minutes and realized that the "cable" light on the modem isn't on... Time Warner's fault.
I quickly called up Time Warner after plugging and unplugging everything multiple times and trouble shot it with their phone support. Needless to say, they couldn't make it work and I'm scheduled for another "technician call" on Tues, August 8. Nothing sooner. It's amazing - how hard is it to make a cable modem work?!

This past Sunday, my brother, Kenny Herman, helped arrange the Exotic Car Toys for Tots which had various members of FerrariChat.com and various other exotic car websites come to the NYU Medical Center on 34th and 1st and showcase their cars and donate toys for the sick children. There was a great turnout- over 80 cars consisting of the Ferrari Enzo, new Ford GT, numerous Lamborghinis, Porsches, Ferraris, Vipers, Corvettes, Lotus, and even a beautiful classic Fiat.
The crowd was fantastic as everyone was willing to share about their cars. The kids received toys ranging from toy cars to the famous and hot toy... Floam. The SAS Group donated over 500 containers of Floam for the children of the hospital.

I spent 30 minutes with PersonalDNA this morning. One of my colleagues has taken a Myers-Briggs assessment and wanted me to do so as well, but I had heard of PersonalDNA thru another colleague and decided to try. My results are pretty good- I agree with most of the things that they have assessed.
If you'd like to review my report, please click here. Feel free to shoot me an email if you agree/disagree with the assessment.
